The ability to make a reader laugh and cry, simultaneously, is all Marian. I feel like I’ve grown up with her too. As a young woman I discovered her books on holiday on a Greek island with a boyfriend who was awful and somehow Marian’s writing made me kick him into touch. Her writing is simply phenomenal. I too am at the perimenopausal stage and her books are one of the very few I revisit (there are too many books to read any twice, but hers are worth a second and third helping)
I came across Rachel’s Holiday many years ago and as a recovered anorexic, coujd well recognise the signs of denial and addiction. That book made such an impression for her funny yet painful and wise portrayal of someone desperately in need of help. Her best book I think and one I’ve read and read again. The cover portrays nothing of the content.
Despite being the same vintage and from the same place as MK I came to her work very late, maybe 10 years ago. We 80s/90s brats were terribly judgemental of what we considered “chick lit”, which to us snooty readerly types basically meant most novels written by women. That was before we knew how the world works. Fast forward many years and a lot of work on ourselves, we have come to realise the genius she is. This year I’m focussing on reading works by female Irish authors. There are so many!!
Oh I thought I knew this story but it’s SO lovely to see the other layers to it. Also, I am sure you weren’t too much. I fucking love you just the way you are at any fucking level and I am certain she did too. ❤️
I once heard St Marian of Keyes (as I believe she ought to be) talking about how if men wrote books about the subjects she (and other female authors) tackle, they would be heralded as writing about the human condition. But women are...not. I really do think Marian has a rare gift - and she's also properly funny.
AND Luke Costello. (That's a complete sentence, obvs.)
'Her novels are all page turners, while at the same time having something profound to say about the experience of being human.' Yes THIS. Exactly this! Also, I still remember how obsessed I was with Jojo Harvey the first the I read The Other Side of the Story...
oh Luke Costello....I miss him. Maybe I should reread them. Marian is wonderful, I do need to continue my reading through all her books, must add to my to read list
Oh!! Wow! How lucky you are!! Oh this is why I sometimes wish I lived in the UK, or at least an anglophone country! But I saw this morning that David Nicholls will be in Geneva in May… but I will probably be in Spain by then😂 believe it or not I’m late coming up Marian. I don’t know why, because she’s exactly what I love. But then it just means I’ve now got so many of her books to enjoy. Im green with envy, you lucky girl!! 😂🤗❤️
